Team 2, Update #2: Hot dog!

October 25, 2006

Greetings from Chile! It’s now our fourth day of service here at the Hogar, and we’re having an amazing time.

Monday night the girls and tias threw a welcome party for us in the dining hall, complete with a Chilean dinner (hot dogs with tomatoes, mayonnaise, and avocado!), dancing, and a delightful opportunity to get to know the girls. The girls and the team members sat together, and we enjoyed each other’s company, even when we had a hard time communicating with one another.

After dinner, the girls performed traditional Chilean dances for us, for which they wore traditional Chilean costumes. Then they asked some of us to join them. Our dancing may not have been nearly as good as theirs, but we had a blast trying!

On Tuesday we began staining the outside of the girls’ dorms, and that’s what we’re still working on today. Joe, Elijah, and Randy (our new team member, who flew in Tuesday morning) have been working hard, putting up the scaffolding for us.

Throughout our time here, we have gotten to know the girls better, playing games with them and chatting (those of us who know some Spanish). Tonight we’ll have the honor of dining with them in their dorm kitchens and getting to see how they live. This will help us to build friendships with them.

Elizabeth is feeling much better—thank you for your prayers. Please continue to pray for the health and safety of our team and also for Nicole, a friend from the local church, who has been sick since Sunday.
